week 10 reading review (group 1)

Photograph is not unusual and not so surprising thing for us today. I am keeping a lot of photos at home or on hard drive, and I always carry camera (digital camera or mobile phone camera). I take photos when I see something beautiful, surprising and funny. In these cases, I take them as sort of evidences, and they would reminds me the detail, such as what happened at the time and what I felt. When I take photo of people (includes myself), it always come with particular stories; what happened, when and where we were. As the memory piece, we take and keep photos.

What is more, photographers take photos as one of their art work. They try to contain messages into photo and try to communicate with audiences. These photos are categorized as art, but it is same to be with extra things, such as message and stories.

However, like this author says, it was different when camera was invented. People took photo as the memory pieces like as today, but it was portrait which reflect their outlooking, but also their identity and the life. This is why this author says “the photograph was a way to cheat death,” Thank of technological development and the popularity of photograph, we do not have these idea any more. Now I am wondering, do we have similar thing (photograph in old days) today?

week 10 reading review (all)

“I have a golden fish memory ”. We use this phrase to mean short memory, or low memorable ability. I am not sure how bad or good memory golden fish has, but we all have memorable ability. Not only using our brain, we try to keep a memory in other ways. First effort would be writing on characters, and today we have many recording media deice, such as videos, photos etc… This author call these memory stored in media memory is”the presence of hard evidence” . When we look, rad or watch these, they recall us our memory clearly and vividly. Sometimes they bring back hidden memory we totally forgot.
Author says these Medias can be use as personal memories, but also public memory. This is because media is developed through social activities, and has social influences. Also it is possible to create symbol or icon of a particular matter among people. Finally this author argues that too much memory depending on these media is dangerous; he use “lack or lose”.
Like as others, when I go travel, I take a lot of photos and videos, because I want to keep the scene which I see as memory. Even if I think so beautiful, I am not sure I can remember exactly same view later without photos. This is the best reason why people use media devices to keep their memories. This is pretty personal memory, but also I have a another experience; when I head an old song with my friend who was born different place, the song reminds us similar memory of old days.
I have not felt “lack or loose ” of memory by using media device, but this is the evidence how much I am lazy to memorize each thing on my brain as depending on medias.

Here is another thought i have.It is clear that media has pretty powerful realationship with our memory. This meas, as we depend on them more and more instead of mour pure memory, it will become much easily to control our social memory and identity by medias. This is pretty scarey.

Week9 Reading review (ALL)

Second life is virtual world in web, where people do many activities by controlling avatar. For example, chatting and watching video and playing games. The inside of the world of second life is pretty similar world as real life. Even though there are many web services or pages which require users to create original avatar, second life is the best example. I used to be a second life user. It was just for class activity, but I created my avatar and travelled second life. When I created my avatar, I found many option, gender, skin colour, hair colour etc… I tried to make it look similar as me, but unfortunately I could not. It is possible to create totally different look characters. In the class we have a class. Guest lecture, who were in different place in real world, took us gallery and showed us many works in second line. This was pretty unique experience for me, because our body was not but we were there. Also I have heard a company had a workshop in second life, where people had communication by chatting or voice chatting through their avatars. This shows the interaction between real world and virtual world. I am not keen to virtual world activity, and do not have big passion on my avatars, but in fact some avatar have specific identity, which is called “digital identity” in reading. Also the avatars experience can be transferred user’s experience. However, I think it is still digital experience which can not be instead of real experience.
